Belbin® Team Roles has been used for over 30 years to help individuals identify how they operate within a team context, and to assist teams in their creation, development and effectiveness.

Originated and developed by Dr. Meredith Belbin following a series of experiments at Henley Management Centre in the 1970s, Belbin® Team Roles has been thoroughly researched and applied across the globe ever since. There are 9 team roles in all and Belbin® Team Roles helps you identify your top 1 or 2 as well as your hierarchy of preference for the remaining roles.

Belbin® define team roles as "a tendency to behave, contribute and interrelate with others in a particular way." Whilst tools such as MBTI® look at the preferences of your personality and how these may inform different situations, Belbin® concentrates specifically on the role your prefer to play within a team context.

How you operate within a team will be determined by a number of factors including:

  • personality
  • experience
  • your environment
  • current values and motivation
  • mental ability
  • role learning

The 9 team roles:

Plant - highly creative and great at generating ideas.
Monitor Evaluator - provide logical analysis and make impartial judgements.
Co-ordinator - bring people together to draw out their best and delegate tasks.
Resource Investigator - externally focussed and skilled in making links / bringing in information outside of the team's internal resources.
Implementer - concerned with how ideas may work in practice and consider the practicalities.
Completer Finisher - skilled in seeing the fine detail and ensuring all angles have been covered.
Teamworker - diplomatic and in tune with how people are feeling. Work to keep the team together.
Shaper - provide the necessary drive to keep the team focused and get the job done.
Specialist - contribute specialist knowledge and expertise that others don't possess.
